What's it really like for a family of four to all live together in a 20ft shipping container home? For Ryan and Lorena, downsizing to the extreme has helped them create a life with more freedom, more time together and far fewer financial pressures. After leaving city life behind, the couple purchased a beautiful two-acre property in Queensland, Australia, where they built their own off-grid shipping container home and began creating a simpler life for their young family.

At just 20ft long, their container home is incredibly compact, but clever design, a large outdoor living area and an additional shed have allowed the family to make the small space work remarkably well. Inside, they have everything they need, including a full kitchen, bathroom, king-size bed and a clever pull-out bed for the children.

But the most interesting part of this home isn't really its size.

By embracing simple living, moving off-grid and becoming mortgage-free, Ryan and Lorena have been able to step away from full-time work and spend more time raising their children. Instead of working simply to afford a larger house, they've deliberately chosen a smaller home and a bigger life together.

Shipping container homes are glamorized all over social media but are they everything they are marketed as? In this video, I uncover 7 reasons why you should stay away from shipping container homes.

Since the early 2000s, shipping containers have captured the imagination of designers and home builders worldwide. They fit in with the very popular tiny house movement that advocates living simpler and in smaller homes. The corrugated metal exterior of shipping containers gives it a trendy, industrial look. Thousands of shipping containers are discarded every year. So, there is a sense of being socially responsible and environmentally conscious when one rescues a shipping container from a junk yard and converts it into a home.

First issue: the size constraints. Standard shipping containers are 20 feet and 40 feet long and 8 feet wide. Most of these containers are 8.5 feet tall but you can order custom ones that are 9.5 feet tall.

Second issue: A metal container works as a system, the idea that every part of this box is structural is false. Every single cut that you make for plumbing, windows, doors, roof openings into its structural frame or corrugated metal siding compromises its strength so you have to reinforce it with metal or wood.

Third issue: the thermal conductivity of steel. It’s not a good insulator, so you can expect the inside of these containers to get very hot in summer and very cold in winter.

Fourth issue: the health risks that come with buying old shipping containers. You can track the locations that the container has been to around the world, but you can’t track exactly what it has carried. It could have carried toxic chemicals such as pesticides or fumigants and the contents might have leaked into the wooden floorboards.

Fifth issue: this type of building is not the best for all locations. It might make sense in coastal regions near port cities where a container is readily available. If you are inland, the cost to transport it all the way to your plot of land is not logical. Also, building with native materials is the most eco-friendly and cost-effective method.

Sixth issue: the idea that you are saving the environment when you use shipping containers and that is a highly sustainable practice. Another important thing to consider is the carbon footprint of your container home. Steel construction is not as environmentally friendly as wood.

Seventh issue: the idea that shipping containers can be the solution to the housing crisis in the world but, this crisis is not a technology problem, it’s far more complex. Purely from a financial aspect, it would be cheaper to build a homeless shelter with wood than build a complex shipping container building. This type of building can maybe be 20% cheaper, not more. The modifications that you need to make a metal box livable aren’t cheap.

In our latest tiny home tour, we share a cozy modern DIY shipping container home on a dreamy waterfront location in northern Washington state. Matt & Paiton are a young couple with no building experience who decided to put down roots and build a tiny house to save money and invest in their future. Previously, they had a simple school bus conversion.

Within a year, they built a 45-foot high cube shipping container home conversion on their developing 5-acre homestead with stunning river views.

Impressively, their tiny container home itself cost only $20,000, due to the clever use of free and low-cost salvage and reclaimed materials. They secured a low-interest lot loan for the land. Now their monthly payment is still $300-400 less than renting a local one-bedroom!

Tour of a 1,280 square foot modern prefab shipping container cottage built with 4 x 40-foot used shipping containers. Built all on one level, this modular bungalow has an open-concept kitchen, living room, and dining area, as well as three bedrooms and two bathrooms. In the hallway, there's a large mechanical room and a laundry room as well.

The home was installed on a helical pile foundation, it has a Posi-Slope roof with an EPDM membrane on top, and 3 styles of exterior siding to add character and dimension to the look of the home – metal, vinyl, and Maibec. There are also two great decks, one at the front and a covered one at the back to optimize time outdoors.

To prevent condensation from forming on the metal walls, they are insulated both on the interior and on the exterior. The home is heated with two electric mini-split units as well as baseboards and an electric fireplace.

In this video, we’re touring a beautiful DIY tiny home that was built inside of one 40-foot-long high cube shipping container. Now when we say that this is a DIY build, we mean that every single thing in this home was made by hand. Not just the walls and floors and things like that, but also all of the cabinets and the countertops, all of the furniture in the living room, and all of the furniture in the bedroom.

The builder, Micah Woods, is a former woodshop and metal shop teacher who put all his skills and a lot of thought into creating a functional small space for full-time living. He came up with some really clever ideas to maximize everything from comfort, functionality, and storage to airflow, lighting, and more.

In this video, we’re touring a really unique and modern shipping container home in Kamloops, BC, and hearing from the family’s story of how and why they host their shipping container on Airbnb. Cathi and her husband Trevor downsized to this small space three years ago after their sons had left home and the couple has been living in it full-time ever since. The main house has 2 bedrooms, a kitchen and a living room, and a full bathroom.

It’s built with 4 recycled shipping containers. There’s an additional studio space that’s connected to the main house with a breezeway and it is set up as a fully self-contained micro cabin, plus there's an awesome outdoor kitchen with a dining space and wood-fired pizza oven.

In today’s video, I’m going to give you a complete guide on everything you need to know about shipping container homes.

So, what is a shipping container home? Its a home made out of used shipping containers. You know, those big metal boxes that are used to transport goods around the world. They come in different sizes, shapes, and colors, but the most common ones are 20 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 8.5 feet high. That’s about 160 square feet of floor space, which may not sound like much, but with some creativity and design, you can turn it into a cozy and comfortable living space.
There are many benefits to this type of housing, such as:
● Cost savings: Shipping containers can be bought for as little as $1,000 but rarely cost more than $5,000.
● Eco-friendliness: By using shipping containers, you’re recycling and reusing materials that would otherwise end up in landfills or rusting away.
● Mobility: Shipping containers are designed to be moved around, so you can easily transport your home to a new location if you want to.
● Customization: Shipping containers are like blank canvases that you can paint and decorate however you like. You can cut out windows, doors, skylights, or even entire walls to create openings and connections.
Some challenges and drawbacks, such as:
● Building codes: Although shipping container housing is becoming more popular, many towns and counties have certain building code restrictions on these homes. You may need to obtain permits, inspections, and approvals before you can start your project.
● Finding containers:
● Financing your project:
● Hiring a contractor: Unless you have the skills and experience to build a shipping container home yourself, you may need to hire a professional contractor to help you with the project.
● Staying safe: Working with shipping containers can be dangerous, especially if you’re cutting, welding, or lifting them.
