When Haseem arrives at Aladdin's home pretending to be his lost uncle, he brings the boy to a magical place which hides the entrance to a dangerous underground cave. There, Haseem asks of Aladdin to find but one simple oil lamp which contains a genie. As stubborn as he is, Aladdin refuses to come outside of the cave with the lamp and eventually discovers its secret. A genie inside the lamp then helps his life change and marry his true love.

We have finally brought one of our most requested artists to the Tiny Desk: Jill Scott! "I thought about you so much," Scott tells the audience. "I was, like, 'One day, Imma be on Tiny Desk!' " In celebration of her new album, To Whom This May Concern, her first in just over a decade, the Philadelphia poet shares some new music along with the classics we've been yearning for.

Most Jill Scott fans know that her albums are gateways to the live show. For over 25 years, the stage has been where she displays her true artistry as a natural-born performer. Every note and every lyric is sold — sometimes powerful and sometimes gentle, but always with a smile. Which is why she stresses before and after the show that this is "live music," and these mics aren't for decoration. As a songwriter, her ability to write for Black women and to Black men has amassed a loyal following, allowing her to sell out shows, whether she has something new to sell or not.

Draped in a dress with patterns that match her colorful and limitless vocal ability, she starts off with "A Long Walk," from her groundbreaking debut album, Who Is Jill Scott?: Words and Sounds Vol. 1, adding a subtle nod to the late D'Angelo. The humor of De La Soul has always been one of its calling cards. When DJ Maseo tells the Tiny Desk crowd, "Ladies and gentlemen, we're a new group called De La Soul," he means it as a joke. But, in so many ways, one of the most influential groups in hip-hop is new: the duties have been reassessed, the focus has shifted and the newness of The Plugs is laid plain here at the Tiny Desk.

De La Soul came to us to celebrate a few milestones: its latest album, Cabin in the Sky, and year three of the De La catalog back under the members' control. This Tiny Desk releases on March 3, which is known as De La Soul Day. It's all a bit bittersweet as David Jolicoeur (aka Trugoy the Dove, aka Plug Two) isn't here with Pos and Maseo. Dave passed away in 2023, just weeks before the group's music was finally made available on streaming platforms after a decades-long legal battle.

Throughout the planning process for this show, both remaining members were candid about what Dave would and wouldn't approve of creatively, but remained open to ideas to honor him. The result was a thoughtful balance of classics like "Stakes is High" and "Breakadawn" with highlights from Cabin in the Sky.

Floetry made its way “from London’s SE5 to Philly's west side just to bring the vibe” to the Tiny Desk. And with the poetic flows of Natalie Stewart (aka The Floacist) and a rich, floating soprano from Marsha Ambrosius (aka The Songstress), the vibe in our space was immaculate.

This duo has known and made music with each other since youth — it’s a sisterhood that doesn’t diminish through the ebbs and flows of life. They began their musical journey together in London and found themselves embedded in Philadelphia’s rich music scene, building a catalog of soulful R&B projects that charmed audiences.

Floetry took a moment from its first tour in a decade to stop by the Tiny Desk. The duo starts their set with “Big Ben,” a callback to their U.K. origins. “Butterflies,” co-written by Ambrosius and Andre Harris — and famously performed by Michael Jackson — is mesmerizing as Ambrosius’ voice flutters. Situated in the middle of the set are the sensual “Say Yes” and “Getting Late,” songs that steam up any environment, causing the pair to joke it might be too early in the day for them. There's a palpable joy and playfulness in the little moments between songs; that joy spills over to the audience, who excitedly sing along. Floetry closes with its debut single, “Floetic,” taking the audience back to the 20-somethings who announced their arrival onto the R&B landscape.

"WTF is a Tiny Desk and no!" are the words that led to one of the most publicized journeys any musician has taken to get to NPR headquarters. That was Juvenile's response to Twitter user @theylovemyke's request for him to play a Tiny Desk concert back in April. His response ignited Black Twitter, launching a barrage of tweets and reposts of favorite performances at the Desk, as fans implored the "T.C. soldier" to reconsider. His viral reconsideration led to a few DMs, which led to a few phone calls, and the date was set. Juve, like some rappers in his class, had never heard of our little nook in Washington, D.C., but he soon found out.

The pressure to deliver was palpable in the planning stages but as the band was assembled, my expectations were exceeded. Tiny Desk alumni and New Orleans natives Trombone Shorty and Alvin Ford were brought into the fold. Another Tiny Desk vet from New Orleans, Jon Batiste, flew in from London just to be a part of the set. Juvenile sourced The Amours from right here in D.C. to handle background vocals, along with string players from the Louisiana Philharmonic for the grand finale. The architect of the Juvenile/Cash Money Records sound, DJ Mannie Fresh, became the glue that pieced it all together. The result was one of the most rambunctious experiences at the Desk. The Hot Boy coasted through highlights from a decades-long, groundbreaking career, concluding with a performance of "Back That Azz Up," so exuberant that the audience demanded an encore and the band obliged. A Tiny Desk first.

Fred Hammond has been a leading architect of modern gospel music, particularly praise and worship, for over 40 years. From his time in groups like Commissioned and United Tenors to leading the choir Radical for Christ and maintaining a long solo career, it's easy to see why Hammond's visit to the Tiny Desk is frequently requested and long overdue.

Fans for every Hammond era will find moments to sing along here. The recent "Love Never Fails" is designed to charge up your faith. Hammond takes us back to his Commissioned days with the 1986 track "Running Back to You." His mega-hits "Jesus Be a Fence Around Me" and "No Weapon" are the perfect one-two punch for anyone needing spiritual encouragement against trying times. When we get to the perennial fan-favorite "We're Blessed" (with a little bit of "Glory to Glory" sprinkled in), Hammond declares: "Tiny knows how to party in the Holy Ghost!" If the audience in the room that day is any indication, you won't want the show to end either. So just restart the video and keep the praise party going.

I told myself I wasn’t going to tear up at this Tiny Desk by The War and Treaty. So much for willpower. When a performance is this strong, there’s no holding back.

For more than a decade, Michael and Tanya Trotter, a husband-and-wife duo based in Nashville, have delivered music directly from the heart. There is no pretense; they are exactly themselves. Naturally, it helps to possess voices rich in both opulence and amplitude, along with emotive astuteness. Michael can toss off a gritty scream reminiscent of Bobby Womack, but touched with the sensuality of Teddy Pendergrass, while Tanya can rock out her voice, à la Tina Turner.

Tanya traces her career roots back to Washington, D.C., while Michael’s back story is more tangled. He taught himself piano as a soldier when there happened to be an instrument in one of Saddam Hussein’s palaces where he and his U.S. Army unit were encamped during the Iraq War. Later, he suffered from PTSD — along with suicidal thoughts and homelessness — which inspired him to write “Five More Minutes.”

That song blends classic soul with rock, just two of the many genres the Trotters routinely merge. There are flashes of country, Americana, R&B and funk in their songs. A retro soul vibe runs through this Tiny Desk set, enthralling the audience, which included local family members and the legendary DJ Donnie Simpson.

T-Pain's fingerprints are all over pop and R&B and hip-hop. He wasn't the first musician to use Auto-Tune as an instrument — he noticed it on a Jennifer Lopez remix, and remembers "Deep" well — but it was, as he says, his style. For a while, in the mid-2000s, he lived at the top of the charts. He dominated that brief moment of our lives when ringtones were a thing. He was celebrated as an innovator, and he happily took his talents where he was invited, which was everywhere.

But somewhere along the way, somebody got it twisted. "People felt like I was using it to sound good," says T-Pain, in an interview that will air on All Things Considered. "But I was just using it to sound different.”

He just turned 30, but T-Pain has already done enough to drop a greatest hits album next week. We asked him if he'd grace the Tiny Desk without any embellishment or effects to show what's really made his career: his voice, and those songs.--FRANNIE KELLEY

So much has happened in Miguel's world since we last saw him at NPR headquarters. Back in 2012, he was one of the very few R&B acts — including Raphael Saadiq, Bettye LaVette and Booker T. Jones — to play a Tiny Desk concert. And, much like the trajectory of this series, Miguel's music has taken some explosive twists and turns.

After performing "Sure Thing," his first song back at the Desk, Miguel says, "That one's come a long way." He reflects on that time in his life and what he's been able to do with it: "There's something about being able to wake up and do this every day, and then to come and perform it — to see the lyrics actually become a part of people's time and memories and space in this experience. I have to say I'm tremendously grateful." Miguel's clearly been on a journey of self-discovery, which we see in a medley of his hits backed by a flawless string section. And on the Spanish-sung "CAOS," he revisits his Mexican roots.

Between his 2017 album War & Leisure and last year's CAOS, the Los Angeles singer-songwriter has been relatively quiet. "I was putting my value in the wrong places, and it made it really hard to do this consistently," he says before the last song. "But, motherf*****, we back!"

Following the second song of his set, Vince Staples does a call out. "I just wanna see something. If you know who George Jackson is, in the crowd, raise your hand!" The Long Beach emcee goes on: "What about Bobby Hutton?" No one raises their hand. He continues saying the names of slain members of the Black Panther Party, also mentioning Larry Kimmons, who was shot and killed by a Pepperdine University security guard in 1969. The song "Go! Go! Gorilla," details the Black community's fear of law enforcement. It was a tense moment that carried throughout the entire Tiny Desk concert.

Staples' evolution has been remarkably rapid over the past decade. His wit and unintentional humor have made most of his interviews must-see TV. In 2024, he took that talent to real TV, launching The Vince Staples Show on Netflix.

Then there's the consistent album output. Each project showcases his ability to push boundaries; his two most recent albums, in particular, present a fully realized artist. The sonic shift is in no way shocking if you've been following along. The subject matter, too, has been broadened: He's now addressing the issues that have plagued his community, psyche and well-documented origin. Here, he's assembled a vibrant young group of musicians to play selections from this year's Cry Baby and a highlight from 2024's Dark Times.

NPR Music's Tiny Desk series will celebrate Black History Month by featuring four weeks of Tiny Desk (home) concerts and playlists by Black artists spanning different genres and generations each week. The lineup includes both emerging and established artists who will be performing a Tiny Desk concert for the first time. Kirk Franklin, set up with his band and choir in a corner of Uncle Jessie's Kitchen, makes a declaration. "I know you're at home right now, in your draws, listening to some Jesus music. It's ok. Jesus loves you in your draws!" The Arlington, Texas studio, named after a long time close friend, features a large photo of the iconic "I AM A MAN" protest signs from the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Strike on the wall. The jubilant energy that Franklin and company emit, juxtaposed with a visual reminder of the strife that Black people have endured is illustrative of the importance of gospel music in the Black community.

For nearly 30 years, Franklin has been widely regarded for revolutionizing gospel. He incorporated secular music, particularly hip-hop, while preserving the message and integrity of traditional gospel. Here, he and his powerhouse choir pace through a decades-long, sixteen Grammy award winning discography of faith, praise and encouragement while cracking plenty of jokes. I cannot recall a more moving Tiny Desk home performance.

All month long, we've presented artists that speak to the diversity and complexity of Black music--where we've been, where we are and where we're going. For the final show, we take it back to the spiritual roots and there's no one more fitting to cap things off than Mr. Kirk Franklin.

Before Nile Rodgers & CHIC set the Tiny Desk off, the icon established a sort of mission statement for the group's sound: "If we can funk in this, you know we can funk." They surely can. In stints since 1972, CHIC has assured its position as funk ambassadors — a position its members clearly relish — and no space is resistant to their grooves. When Rodgers asks singer Kimberly Davis to show the audience "how we do it in the CHIC organization," she launches into high-powered vocals that vaporize every note. And when he asks drummer Ralph Rolle to lead them to "maximum funkocity," Rolle ignites call-and-response with an electrified crowd. As the ringleader of the CHIC experience, Rodgers crams a lifetime's worth of nightlife into every strum of his guitar.

Rodgers' career is epic in both scope and impact. The 1979 CHIC album Risqué was a disco milestone that became a hip-hop cornerstone. Standing at inflection points for two different genres is enough to make a career, but Rodgers was far from done. An incomparable songwriter and session musician, his call sheet as a producer is emblematic of his immense range: David Bowie, Diana Ross, Madonna and Mick Jagger, just to name a few. His work is embedded in the very fabric of popular music, and he continues to add to his resume decades after first making changes to the sonic landscape. In 2014, Rodgers won the Grammy for record of the year with Daft Punk. This year, he amassed more honors for his work on Beyoncé's RENAISSANCE.

His wondrous set spans his massive catalog — songs he wrote for CHIC, songs he wrote with collaborators, songs he wrote for other stars and a surprise song he wrote for a classic movie. Throughout, Rodgers is the pulse for an ever-amplifying funk. The band's performance of "I'm Coming Out" builds to a rip-roaring sax solo. A rollicking performance of "We Are Family" breaks down in the middle before erupting to a triumphant finish. And atop the rippling bassline of "Good Times," Rodgers breaks into an impromptu version of "Rapper's Delight," which samples the song. It all leads to the maximum funkocity of Bowie's "Let's Dance," a tribute to the genre's reach and power.
